Production in the paint and varnish industry suffered a severe slump in April. According to the market research and consulting institute Chem Research, the decline in the EU27 region was much more pronounced with a minus of 28.5 % than in Germany with a minus of 18 %. The more positive development in Germany is largely due to the good performance of architectural coatings. Demand for these products increased significantly in the first four months, particularly in the do-it-yourself sector. Compared with the rest of Europe, the Mediterranean countries Spain, France and Italy were particularly affected, with declines of up to 40 %. Turkey showed a decline of almost 30 %, while the United Kingdom lost around 18 %. This trend is also confirmed by the German sales statistics for the paint and coatings industry. Domestic sales fell by around 13 %, while sales to the euro zone fell by around 30 %. By contrast, sales to the rest of the world (non-euro countries, Rest of the World) fell by only a single-digit percentage.
