BASF inaugurates new Automotive Application Center in Shanghai

On March 12, 2019, BASF officially inaugurated its new facilities at the Shanghai Innovation Campus. 35 million was invested in the construction of the new 5,000 square meter buildings. This includes the Automotive Application Center Asia-Pacific, which is equipped with a modern spray booth for electrostatic applications, a testing laboratory for physical tests and a 3D robot. The 3D robot can simulate almost any situation in a painting line worldwide. The robot can paint not only horizontal and vertical surfaces, but also three-dimensional objects such as car doors and bumpers. This enables the development of new products for customers in the automotive industry. In addition to new design solutions for automotive products, it also opens up opportunities for new developments especially for the automotive paint industry. "This is an important milestone in the expansion of BASF's research and development presence in Asia Pacific. We now have a complete local development cycle for paints and coatings - from the region, for the region," says Dirk Bremm, President of BASF's Coatings division.
For the first time, BASF presented product innovations developed at the Innovation Campus Shanghai. For example, a new water-based single-layer coating with an integrated coating system. The product is intended to help automotive manufacturers comply with strict regulatory requirements for emissions and VOCs. In Integrated Process 2 for metallic paints, the filler is integrated into the base coat to improve its functional properties. With a single-layer coating, it is even possible to integrate three work steps into a single one.
