Applying a customer-specific finish to a car is normally a difficult and expensive undertaking in high-volume automotive painting lines, but Lamborghini's new paint shop will soon make this possible without problems. The new facility now being built at Lamborghini's headquarters in Sant'Agata Bolognese, Italy, will create a Smart Paint Shop for the Urus, the company's new SUV, fully in line with the Industry 4.0 vision. According to Eisenmann, the new paint shop will revolutionise the conventional car painting process, discontinuing the rigidly linear principle in favour of a highly flexible workshop with linear elements. This allows currently available production resources, such as dryers or specific spray booths, to be efficiently utilised, even when producing diverse paint finishes, or when components of differing materials are being simultaneously processed. The "brain" of the new paint shop is a production-control system from Eisenmann Industrial Software Company (Enisco). The intelligent control system, which supports online planning, material flow control and integrated digital worker guidance, makes it possible to finish a variety of body types and materials and to produce customer-specific finishes within a single paint shop. The paint shop is scheduled for completion at the end of 2018. In addition to the production control software, Eisenmann is also supplying a sealing system complete with material supply equipment, as well as topcoat spray booths, dryers, a high-bay warehouse, conveyors and the workstations.
